First, make sure that the kittens are truly abandoned. Leave the kittens alone and watch them for about 8-12 hours to make sure their mom is not around. If the kittens appear to be clean and at a healthy weight, it is most likely that their mom is taking care of them.
If the kittens are in an unsafe area, move them to a safe place nearby so the mother can still locate them.
If the kittens are dirty and appear unhealthy, contact a local community cat group to help determine if the kittens need your assistance.
I found a stray dog. What should I do?
If you found a lost dog or cat without an I.D. tag, here are some tips for reuniting the animal with its owner:
● Call your local non emergency police department number to report finding the pet.
● Take the animal to a veterinary clinic or animal shelter to have it scanned for a microchip. If the pet has a microchip implanted, the owners can often be contacted immediately and reunited with their pet that same day!

● Post in local social media groups, on the Ring app, neighborhood chat groups, and anywhere you can reach groups of people.
● If you are unable to find the pet’s owner and cannot temporarily care for him/her, find out the local shelter, animal control agency, or veterinary hospital that accepts stray pets for the municipality. The South Suburban Humane Society has a chart located here https://southsuburbanhumane.org/lost-and-found but calling the facility directly is recommended as the list is subject to frequent change. If you are able to temporarily care for the pet but need a little assistance, several of our organizations can help you by giving you pet food, litter, and vaccines.
There are several options for rehoming recommended by coalition partners. Many of our individual organizations offer courtesy rehoming postings on our websites. Additionally, Rehome from Adopt-a-pet is a national successful website that pet owners find to be user friendly. Visit rehome.adoptapet.com.
